Lack of provision of medical facilities
in railway hospitals and trains

About Railway
The railway track across Pakistan covers a distance of 7,791 km between Torkham and Karachi. Pakistan Railways has more than 100,000 employees and annual revenue of over 40 billion while Pakistan Railways has more than 300 positions and seven divisions to work in various sectors. For more than one lakh employees, health facilities are almost non-existent and hundreds of junior railway employees are not even aware of the medical facilities.

Railway Hospital
Railway hospitals have been set up at the divisional level but their condition is critical and they are deployed there. The medical staff has also taken full advantage of the ignorance and absence of patients and have made it a habit to be absent from most of the duties.

The Railway Sukkur Division Hospital is located in Khanpur but neither the railway employees nor the passengers know about it. Where to contact or how to get medical help if they have any medical issues while traveling.

Railway Rules
According to the railway rules, the presence of first aid boxes at every station, patient registration register, and the presence of trained staff will be ensured in any case. Or there was a prescription for fever and snake bites.

It was found that some of the medicines were expired and some were nearing expiration. Empty tincture bottles were spilling and on the other hand, a patient was registered in the register of medical aid in 2015.

There is a lady doctor belonging to the Zardari family on duty at Khanpur Railway Hospital who has made it a habit to be absent from duty.

According Rail Officials
Similarly, Dr. Yasir Soomro has been posted at Sukkur Division Rohri station who is busy with other activities besides government duty. Similarly, in order to provide medical facilities to the passengers traveling on the train, first aid boxes have been placed near the guard in the vehicle but the condition of the first aid at the station is the same as that of the box on the train. Also, in view of the medical issue, both the station staff and the vehicle have started to feel safe in calling the rescue instead of providing medical facilities.

Passenger
Recently, Javed, a resident of Shujaabad, was electrocuted in Zakaria Express from Karachi to Multan while two passengers were injured due to electrocution. No medical aid was provided to them on the train but rescue was called at the station.

The authorities want to provide facilities for the passengers but the system of its implementation has almost failed due to which the railways can benefit but the passengers or the railway employees are being deprived of this benefit.

Railway SOP's
The cruelty is to travel by train. Even if they feel the need for a doctor or medicine at any place, there is no one to guide them, while according to the Railway SOP, every guard in charge of the train has clear instructions to keep almost all the medicines for minor medical needs.

But since 1990, My self has also been traveling in the same trains, but to date, no guardian in charge, police officer, ticket checker, or any railway staff has heard a sick passenger tell him that he has a headache, fever, body aches, diarrhea, abdominal pain, etc.

The medicines are available in the car itself. This is the main reason The guard in-charge has left out the fact that it is a matter of keeping medicines, which is why he has never been seen providing medical facilities to any patient in the vehicle, but if someone suddenly has a medical problem, he is advised to take any medicine. If the vehicle is stopped at the station, the rescue crew will be called.

What Happened
Despite not receiving the full amount of the prescribed ticket from the passengers and sometimes additional charge through overcharging, the Railways is not providing basic facilities to the passengers. To date, no voice has been raised at the local level, nor have these important issues ever been discussed in high-level meetings.

The question is whether the millions of passengers traveling on railway trains will continue to be exploited or whether anyone will ever listen to them.
