Allahabad: Allahabad Central University Vice-Chancellor Sangita Srivastava has filed a petition seeking a ban on loud call to prayer.
This is not the first time that voices have not been raised in India regarding the call to prayer.
Sangita Srivastava, the vice-chancellor of Baralabad Central University, lodged a complaint with the district administration in which she said that the loud adhan of Fajr given at 5.30 am every morning disturbs her sleep and causes headaches which affects her work. Therefore, loud adhan should be banned at Fajr.
The Vice-Chancellor further said that he was not against any religion, caste or race but it was necessary to find a solution to this problem. The vice chancellor lodged a complaint not only with Mike but also with various loud announcements during Ramadan.
The mosque management turned down the loudspeaker after the vice chancellor's complaint, while Mike's direction was diverted from the vice chancellor's residence. Despite this, various political parties staged demonstrations in the city against the ban on the call to prayer.
On the other hand, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, a representative body of Indian Muslims, condemned the vice-chancellor's complaint, saying that people in India respect each other's religious sentiments. Therefore, it is better not to spread the wind of extremism with these words.
